HOWIE

"No more broken birds." Howie smiles over at Brian and taps him on his knee. "You hear me, Rok?"

"I'm listening." Brian puts down his book and looks up, smiling. Another book about parenting. It's exciting, it is. And Howie feels like an ungrateful heel, or something, someone who doesn't appreciate how exciting new parenthood will be and just wants to vent about his fucked up sex life.

"So, yeah. That's all. I've decided." Howie waves at the book. "Tell me about the book."

"No, the book isn't important. Let's talk about you. Come on. No more broken birds. Tell me more."

"Just. Okay, let's look at my last two crushes. Or not. Just, you know, I tend. I keep falling for these guys who are hurt underneath and I just want to fix things for them and I really can't." Howie sighs.

"That sounds like a really good plan. You need someone who's worried about you. That's what you deserve." Brian looks so confident, Howie decides to believe him.

Today's meeting, three days after he sees Brian, is going to be boring. More real estate. Howie likes real estate, though, it's a safe investment and he's building for the future. Something he's actually building. Boring but worthwhile, he thinks. Until he steps inside.

And this is right up his alley. Strikingly handsome, hot, bald, intelligent, and there's something in those eyes. He's sure of it. "Lex Luthor," perfect for Howie guy says, shakes his hand firmly. Howie's in love, definitely.

Lex is selling land in Metropolis, Howie wants to build condos there. Right off the highway, easy commute. They talk price, surveying, escrow. Smart and confident, it's like a happy beat in his veins. Howie wonders where Lex lives year-round.

And then they're done, too soon. Howie stands up again and says, "How long are you in town?"

Lex smiles. "Just for tonight. Then back to Smallville, or wherever my father dictates." And there's something, a flash there. Howie's stomach almost turns. Broken, he thinks.

Maybe everyone's broken. Maybe it's just the lay of the land. AJ, Nick, random hot guys he meets. Howie's an idiot to set off what appears to the majority of the people he finds attractive because they're broken. Idiot.

Howie blinks. He says, "Well, I own this club, downtown. Come by, I'll put you on the list."

Lex says, "Definitely."

Maybe it's not so bad. Maybe Howie imagined it. Maybe he should figure out how to be like Lance Bass, and get laid a lot and not be so picky. Maybe Howie needs to do things differently.

Differently means when he sees Lex that night he brings him upstairs to the VIP backroom. And for the first time in his life, the security guy winks at him as Lex follows him up.

"Do they really call you 'sweet D?'" Lex smirks.

Howie grabs at Lex's neck, bites down then licks the marks his teeth left. Sweating, everywhere, the backs of his knees slide against Lex's shoulders, and it's great.

Lex pushes in again and says, "That wasn't very sweet."

Howie closes his eyes and throws his head back. Great to get laid, great to do this. This. He says, "Fourteen year olds call me that. You're not fourteen, are you?"

Lex grunts. "No." He thrusts and comes. Then his hand, pumping up and down and Howie comes as well. So that's nice. Nice.

Lex stands up and starts getting dressed. Boxer-briefs, slacks. And he smiles. But it's there. Howie's no idiot. Broken, wounded, no trust. He could spend a lifetime on this one. The sex, he thinks, if things went well, would be pretty great.

Lex tightens his belt, sleek, and hot. He says, "Would you want to come to Metropolis? Look at the area yourself?"

Believe, Howie thinks. He says, "No. I don't think so. I'll trust the surveyors."

Lex's smile doesn't fall. He doesn't even blink. "And that's a plan. I'll see you next time I visit?"

Howie feels undignified, naked, sticky stomach, sprawled on the couch. Happy medium, he thinks. "Next time. I'll be here."
